You open LinkedIn. Another headline: “AI Interpreting Will Be the Next Great Disruption.” You close the tab. The next call rings. It’s a cardiology consult. The provider starts talking fast. AI isn’t taking this one.
The AI-and-interpreting conversation is everywhere right now. Slator says it’s a disruption. The ATA says don’t panic. LinkedIn commenters say everything from “we’re all finished” to “AI can’t even handle accents.” And most of it is written for executives and procurement teams. Almost none of it is written for the person actually on the call.

What AI Interpreting Actually Looks Like Right Now
The World Health Organization tested a leading AI interpreting system across 90 interpretation sessions at their meetings. One passed. The scores ranged from 5% to 83%, with 75% set as the passing threshold. The one that passed still contained errors that WHO deemed a reputational risk.
That’s not a fluke result from a bad system. That’s the state of the art in 2026.
The American Translators Association, the National Center for State Courts, and the American Bar Association all agree: AI should not replace human interpreters in high-stakes settings. The NCSC specifically states it “should not be used to replace human interpreters for real-time spoken interpretation.”
The reasons are the same ones you deal with every shift. AI processes sound patterns, not meaning. It doesn’t know context. It doesn’t read hesitation or catch sarcasm. It chokes on overlapping speech and heavy accents. And it falls apart on the exact things that matter most in your work: medication names, legal terms, culturally loaded language.
Picture a real call. The provider says “We need to rule out PE.” You hear “pulmonary embolism” because you’ve been on this call for ten minutes and know the context. AI hears two letters and guesses. Discharge instructions with six medications and four dosage changes. Those calls aren’t getting easier. And they aren’t going to AI anytime soon.
The Fear Is Real. But the Story Is Wrong.
The anxiety is justified. The Communications Workers of America reported that interpreters at LanguageLine face “constant threat of termination based on AI performance guidelines,” guidelines the interpreters themselves never get to see. That’s not an abstract industry trend. That’s someone’s job security tied to a metric they can’t review.
Meanwhile, a Boostlingo survey found that half of remote interpreters are still unfamiliar with AI tools for interpreting. The industry is moving fast, and most working interpreters aren’t part of the conversation about how it moves.
The fear usually goes like this: AI replaces me, I lose my income, the profession disappears.
That narrative gets the direction wrong. AI isn’t replacing interpreters. It’s replacing the easy calls. The calls that remain are harder and higher-stakes. They require the exact skills that make you a professional interpreter: reading context, exercising judgment, mediating between cultures. The work that stays needs you more, not less.

What “AI for Interpreters” Actually Means on a Call
There’s a gap between the headlines and what AI tools actually do for working interpreters.
Nobody is shipping a tool that interprets the call for you. No product in 2026 can reliably do that in a medical or legal setting. The WHO tested it. One out of ninety.

Specialization is about to matter more than it ever has. Generalist calls can be handled by AI or less experienced interpreters. But the interpreter who can handle a complex oncology consultation or accurately render a deposition full of legal procedure? That person is harder to replace, not easier.
